Tailwheel Overhaul Part 2

New thrust washer and new thrust plate installed. New tail wheel attach bushings installed where the tailwheel bolts to the fuselage. New Scott springs and links installed, but not adjusted yet.

I need a couple AN960-816 washers and then align the breakpoint on the tailwheel.

Tailwheel Overhaul Part 1

The Scott 3200 tailwheel was functional, but looked like heck, so I’m overhauling it. After taking it apart , I discovered a few parts were missing while others were worn down.

So I disassembled, cleaned, inspected all the parts, and bought new parts for those missing and worn.

Now I’m reassembling it. I’ve posted some photos for progress up through this afternoon. Parts should arrive Saturday.

Before disassembly.

Five springs for heavier airplanes. Lots of grease there.

Wheel bearings

Wheel halves.

Old dowel pin worn down

Old and new paw.

New shim installed and old and worn removed.

Missing the top thrust washer and thrust plate assembly.

New dowel pin installed after using an easy out to remove the worn pin.

Antennas and Bottom Panels

Early on I decided to place the antennas on the bottom panel between the landing gear. I have seen them on top above the cabin, but decided I didn’t like the location. The downsides are dragging them on the grass if landing on a grass strip and some interference from the gear covers. However, I don’t think it’ll be a problem. I can hear Lincoln Ground, Tower, and Lincoln approach as well as other aircraft while it’s in my garage with the door closed and that’s 12 miles away. A radio check with Lincoln Tower shows I can communicate with them just fine with the garage door open.

The center antenna with the new doubler installed. First few photos are showing the installation of the doubler. 36 rivets if I counted correctly. The last two photos show the primer applied afterwards and the other bottom panel.
